Location: Rocky View County (Calgary – Home Office); Various Project Sites throughout Canada and USA

We are looking for a proven leader who is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive range of employee health and safety programs and services to meet the goals and legal obligations of Energy Wind & Renewables Ltd. (EWR). These functions include, but may not be limited to, the assessment, facilitation and evaluation of injury prevention, environmental safety, occupational health and safety, implementation and consultation on safety policies.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Promote a positive safety culture and ensure that health and safety is a number one priority for all business units. Hold others accountable and ensure that all safe work practices and procedures are known, understood and followed.
  • Plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and update EWR’s occupational health and safety policies, procedures and programs. Including Standards, Standards Operating Procedures (SOP’s), as well as Job Hazard Analysis (JHA’s).
  • Coordinate administrative activities to keep the HSE Safety Management System (SMS) current and organized.
  • Support internal client needs for accurate and timely HSE related documentation.
  • Review and approve client HSE prequalification submittals, Master Service Agreement submittals as well as Subcontractor Prequalification submittals.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly HSE performance reports for internal and external clients, and ensure that action is taken to celebrate success, as well as correct areas of concern based on statistical and trending analysis.
  • Support and promote occupational health, wellness and safety initiatives.
  • Develop, roll out and manage a Safety Improvement Plan.
  • Coordinates external COR audits; coordinate and carry out internal COR audits.
  • Monitor Carrier Profile.
  • Assist in the development of annual health and safety plans for EWR based on a full review of health and safety-related needs (assessment of hazards, analysis of database, audits, changing legislation and best practices) as required by the Ministry of Labour.
  • Provide leadership with reports on WCB incidents and injuries, lost time injuries, health- related absenteeism and other occupational health and safety information.
  • Provide necessary training, leadership, organization and control to meet EWR’s objectives or safety improvement plans.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on return to work programs, working closely with the employee, his/her supervisors and the insurance company to ensure the employee’s safety and health.
  • Create and deliver training on Incidents Investigations. Participate in all Medium and High- Risk Incidents Investigations or Refusals to Work. Organize and/or assist in all medium and high-risk investigation reviews.
  • Track and manage all costs related to incidents.
  • Develop and deliver safety orientation (as needed) and training.
  • Lead an annual health and safety program audit to ensure the effectiveness of occupational health and safety programs.
  • Assist in the development and management of all internal health and safety audits for EWR including risk assessments.
  • Coordinate health and safety supplies by ensuring appropriate supplies are identified and purchased in a timely and cost-effective manner and used appropriately.
  • Liaise with Canadian Claim Service (CCS) and Insurance on incidents/government violations.
  • Monitor, amend and update the EWR’s Health and Safety Handbook
  • Act as a resource to or serve as a member on the Health and Safety Committee, assisting and providing information and responses on behalf of the company.
  • Prepare and manage the occupational health and safety budget per project.
  • Complete site visit audit requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 5+ years of progressive supervisory/management experience (*preferably in the Wind Energy Industry.
  • 2+ years supervising a team of at least 2 people
  • Experience working within the wind energy industry.

  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills, with the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Must be a demonstrated decision-maker who easily interacts with others and can lead and motivate a team.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency, combined with a result driven positive attitude.
  • Advance proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Must possess a high level of expertise in incident investigation, has exposure to various investigation disciplines (SCAT, TapRoot) and has experience establishing measurable actions plans for continuous improvement.
  • Significant experience leading a team within the wind energy industry
  • Degree/Diploma in OH&S or related discipline is preferred instead of post-secondary.

Working Conditions:

  • Overtime as required.
  • Able and willing to travel to multiple project sites within Canada and the USA.
